Pakistan’s E-Commerce Faces Major Crisis as Internet Outages Cause Massive Losses

The e-commerce sector in Pakistan is facing a severe crisis due to ongoing and widespread internet outages that have caused chaos across the country. Over the past few weeks, millions of online businesses have reported significant losses, with many at risk of shutting down completely. This nationwide disruption has not only damaged the digital economy but also left consumers frustrated and unable to shop online.

The internet problems, which started earlier this month, have affected major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) throughout Pakistan, leading to slow speeds, inconsistent connections, and even total blackouts in some areas. These issues have made it nearly impossible for e-commerce platforms to operate, bringing online shopping to a near halt.

The hardest hit are major e-commerce platforms, small businesses, and individual sellers who rely on the internet for transactions, inventory management, and customer communication. Industry experts say that the sector has already lost billions of PKR, and the situation could get worse if the internet issues continue.

In a joint statement, several leading e-commerce companies voiced their concerns: “The ongoing internet outages have put a huge strain on the entire e-commerce ecosystem. From logistics and payment processing to customer service and order fulfillment, every part of our operations has been affected. We are facing a financial disaster like never before.”

Pakistan’s e-commerce sector had been growing rapidly, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, as more people turned to online shopping for convenience. However, the current internet crisis threatens to undo this progress, potentially setting the industry back by years.

Digital payment systems, which are essential for e-commerce, have also been badly hit. Banks and fintech companies report that many online transactions have failed due to connectivity issues, leading to a sharp drop in online sales. This has not only hurt businesses but also made consumers hesitant to shop online.

The impact of these internet outages goes beyond e-commerce. The broader digital economy, including freelance work, remote jobs, and digital marketing, has also been severely disrupted, leaving millions of Pakistanis without a steady income.

Dr. Ali Saeed, a well-known economist, warned about the long-term effects of this crisis. “Pakistan’s economy relies heavily on its digital infrastructure, and these outages are threatening the livelihoods of millions. The losses in the e-commerce sector are just the beginning. If this situation isn’t fixed quickly, we could be facing a major economic downturn,” he said.

The government has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and is reportedly working with ISPs to fix the technical issues causing the outages. However, little progress has been made so far, and frustration is growing among businesses and consumers alike.

Many small businesses, which have fewer resources to survive such disruptions, are already thinking about closing down permanently. The Pakistan E-Commerce Association has urged the government to take immediate action, warning that if the internet issues aren’t resolved soon, the entire sector could collapse.

As the internet crisis continues, Pakistan’s e-commerce sector is at a critical point. The future of online businesses, which were once seen as a source of growth and innovation, now hangs in the balance, with hopes that a solution will be found before the damage becomes permanent.
