Mariah Carey Mourns the Loss of Her Mother and Sister on the Same Day

Mariah Carey is heartbroken after losing both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, on the same day over the weekend.

In an exclusive statement, the 55-year-old Grammy-winning singer shared her deep sorrow, saying, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Tragically, my sister also passed away on the same day.” Mariah expressed gratitude for having spent the last week with her mother and thanked everyone for their support and respect for her privacy during this challenging time.

The causes of death for Patricia and Alison have not been revealed. Patricia, a trained opera singer and vocal coach from Juilliard, was married to Alfred Roy Carey, with whom she had three children: Alison, Mariah, and Morgan. Mariah’s relationship with her mother was complex, marked by a mixture of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah described their relationship as a “prickly rope.”

Despite their complicated relationship, Mariah and Patricia maintained a bond. Mariah also dedicated part of her memoir to her mother, acknowledging that Patricia did the best she could.

Mariah’s relationship with her sister Alison was also strained. In her memoir, Mariah mentioned that it was “emotionally and physically safer” for her to have no contact with Alison or their brother Morgan at that time.
