LHC Orders Recovery of Missing Anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan Within 48 Hours

In a recent development, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken strict action regarding the case of missing anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan. Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti suspended a police inspector on Monday and issued a 48-hour deadline to the Sialkot district police officer (DPO) to locate and produce the allegedly missing media personality.

The LHC was presiding over a habeas corpus petition filed by Riaz’s father, seeking his son’s whereabouts. During the hearing, the chief justice issued a show cause notice to the relevant station house officer (SHO) and warned the DPO of potential punitive measures.

Chief Justice Bhatti expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding Riaz’s arrest, stating that the anchorperson was detained while he was on his way abroad, under the pretext of a potential threat to law and order. The SHO claimed that Riaz was taken into custody at the airport and subsequently transferred to jail.

However, a law officer informed the court that the anchorperson had been released from jail after providing a written undertaking. This raised doubts about the legitimacy of the undertaking, given that it was provided by an individual intending to travel abroad. Chief Justice Bhatti remarked that it appeared the government had deliberately sought to hinder Riaz’s travel plans.

Furthermore, the chief justice criticized the DPO for scapegoating the SHO in the case, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution. The court adjourned the hearing until May 18 and directed the DPO to ensure the recovery of Imran Riaz and produce him before the court within the given timeframe, warning of potential consequences otherwise.

Imran Riaz Khan, known for his vocal support of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and his policies, was taken into custody by the police on May 11 at Sialkot Airport amid a government crackdown on PTI supporters following protests and unrest triggered by the arrest of former premier Imran Khan.
