Lawyer and civil rights activist Jibran Nasir was reportedly taken by unidentified individuals while he and his wife were heading home after dinner on Thursday night in Karachi.
His wife, Mansha Pasha recounted that their vehicle was stopped by around 15 men in plain clothes armed with pistols. They surrounded the couple’s car and forcefully took Jibran Nasir without providing any explanation.
According to Pasha, a white Toyota Hilux/Vigo with the license plate number BF 4356 suddenly blocked their car and hit it from the front left side. This forced them to stop near Ideal Bakery on 26th Street, Defence Phase 5, Karachi.
In a heartfelt video message, Pasha shared details of the incident and asked for prayers for her husband’s safe return. This event adds to a series of recent abductions highlighting concerns about the status of human rights in the country.
Plea for swift action
Moreover, Mansha pasha express her distress and seeking urgent intervention from legal authorities to take immediate action for her husband’s release.
She also demanded that those responsible for the abduction should be held accountable. The family is awaiting the filing of a formal complaint to initiate legal proceedings.
Jibran Nasir, a lawyer and civil right activist gained recognition after contesting the 2018 general elections as an independent candidate in Karachi.
He has been vocal in criticizing the recent state crackdown on the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) and the legal process concerning individuals allegedly involved in the riots.
Nasir’s advocacy work against sectarian violence earned him a place on the Foreign Policy Magazine’s list of three Pakistanis doing inspirational work in 2013.
Alarming trend of abductions
This incident is part of a recent series of abductions that have caused worries about violations of human rights in Pakistan.
In a similar incident last week, senior journalist Sami Abraham was also taken by unidentified people in Islamabad and was released after six days. Sami Abraham’s brother, Ali Raza filed a complaint about the abduction at the Aabpara Police Station. Additionally, anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan who was initially arrested on May 11 for hate speech charges and later released was later taken by “unknown individuals” and is currently missing.
