Karachi Ranked Among Least Livable Cities Globally in 2024 Survey

Karachi, once a modern port city with great infrastructure and education, has been ranked as the least livable city again in a global survey. Top 10 most livable cities of 2024:

  1. Vienna, Austria
  2. Copenhagen, Denmark
  3. Zurich, Switzerland
  4. Melbourne, Australia
  5. Calgary, Canada
  6. Geneva, Switzerland
  7. Sydney, Australia
  8. Vancouver, Canada
  9. Osaka, Japan
  10. Auckland, New Zealand

The Economist Intelligence Unit ranked 173 cities worldwide based on healthcare, culture and environment, stability, infrastructure, and education. Cities were scored from one to 100, with one being the worst and 100 being the best.

Karachi ranked 169th with an overall score of 42.7. It scored very low in stability, with only 20 points. Karachi’s scores in other areas were 54.2 for healthcare, 35.9 for culture and environment, 75 for education, and 51.8 for infrastructure.

Other cities with poor living conditions trailing behind Karachi include Lagos in Nigeria, Algiers in Algeria, Tripoli in Libya, and Damascus in Syria. This report comes during a time of political and economic crisis in Pakistan.

On the other hand, Vienna in Austria topped the list with a score of 98.4. Copenhagen in Denmark was second, and Zurich in Switzerland moved up to third place. Western European cities did well, with 30 cities averaging a score of 92 out of 100. However, the region saw a decline in stability scores due to more protests and crime.
