Iran’s President Pezeshkian Warns Israel Against Attacking Lebanon

Israel has accused Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement of being responsible for a recent rocket strike, but Hezbollah denies this. Since Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, attacked southern Israel on October 7, Hezbollah has been engaging in near-daily cross-border fire with Israel in support of Hamas, which led to a war in the Gaza Strip.

On Monday, Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian warned Israel against attacking Lebanon after a deadly rocket strike in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, which Israel blamed on Hezbollah. Pezeshkian said during a call with French President Emmanuel Macron that Israel would face severe consequences if it attacked Lebanon.

Pezeshkian officially took on his responsibilities on Sunday after being endorsed by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and he will be sworn into parliament on Tuesday.

Israel has vowed to retaliate after the strike on a football field in Majdal Shams, a Druze Arab town in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, killed 12 youths on Saturday.

Pezeshkian accused Israel of violating international laws in its actions against Palestinians. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanani, warned Israel on Sunday that any new military actions in Lebanon could lead to “unforeseen consequences” and increased instability in the region.

Kanani accused Israel of blaming Hezbollah to divert attention from its actions in the Gaza Strip, where war has been ongoing since October 7. He also stated that Israel has no moral authority to comment on the deaths in Majdal Shams, an area Israel seized from Syria in 1967 and later annexed, a move not recognized by the United Nations.

Iran, which does not recognize Israel, has supported the Palestinian cause since its 1979 Islamic revolution. While Iran praised Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, it denied any involvement.
