New Delhi, July 1, 2023 – In a major milestone for India’s infrastructure development, the country has surpassed China to become the second-largest country in terms of road network size. With an expansion of approximately 1.45 lakh kilometers in the past eight years, India’s road connectivity has witnessed a remarkable transformation under the leadership of Mr. Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport and Highways. The United States continues to hold the top position in this regard.
Focus on Highways and Expressways Brings Remarkable Progress:
During a press conference held today, Minister Gadkari expressed his satisfaction with India’s achievement in surpassing China’s road network. He highlighted the significant improvements made in highways and the establishment of new expressways to enhance the country’s transportation infrastructure. Notably, the ongoing Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which is nearing completion, stands as India’s longest project to date.
Revolutionizing India’s Road Network Under Mr. Gadkari’s Tenure:
Prior to Mr. Gadkari’s leadership, India had a road network spanning 91,287 kilometers. Under his visionary approach, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has played a pivotal role in constructing and enhancing highways and expressways across the country. The addition of over 30,000 kilometers to the network marks a significant achievement and demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure for the benefit of its citizens.
Unprecedented Growth in Toll Collection Revenue:

Over the past nine years, toll collection has risen from Rs 4,770 crore to an impressive Rs 41,352 crore.
