The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked Pakistan to increase gas prices as part of the talks for a new loan program. Sources say the IMF has suggested raising gas prices for households, fertilizer producers, CNG stations, and cement factories starting in August. The proposed increase ranges from Rs 100 to Rs 400 per month for both protected and non-protected consumers. However, the IMF does not recommend increasing gas prices for commercial users, such as tandoors (traditional bread ovens).
To help reduce the circular debt in the gas sector, three different plans have been shared with the IMF. Discussions have also included a dividend scheme to address this issue. Additionally, the IMF has proposed higher gas prices for fertilizer plants. An agreement has been reached to share data on subsidies, reforms, and tariffs with the IMF promptly.
Earlier, the IMF mission also asked Pakistani authorities to impose a tax on monthly pensions that exceed Rs 100,000.
