Hurricane Debby Hits Florida, Causes Five Deaths Before Weakening

At least five people have died after Hurricane Debby hit Florida and then weakened to a tropical storm. Debby is expected to cause heavy flooding in parts of Georgia and the Carolinas over the next few days.

The National Hurricane Center warned about “life-threatening” floods as the “slow-moving storm” brings “torrential rains.”

It was reported by the authorities that the dead included a 13-year-old boy who died when a tree fell on a mobile home in Levy County. In Hillsborough County, near Tampa, an 18-wheel truck veered into a canal during the storm, and the driver was found dead.

In Dixie County, just west of Gainesville, officials said a woman and a 12-year-old died in a car crash on Sunday night. In southern Georgia, local media reported another death, a 19-year-old, when a large tree fell on a porch at a home in Moultrie.

Jamie Rhome, the deputy director of the hurricane center, said the storm’s slow pace could cause “catastrophic flooding.”

Debby’s waves and strong winds also washed ashore 25 packages of cocaine worth more than $1 million in the Florida Keys, according to the US Border Patrol.

In Florida, about 150,000 homes and businesses were without power on Monday night, according to PowerOutage.com. Another 36,000 residents in Georgia and South Carolina also faced outages.

The storm is forecasted to move along the coast, bringing heavy rain to southeast Georgia and the Carolinas on Tuesday and Wednesday, before moving inland near the South Carolina coast on Thursday.

Before the storm hit, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 61 of Florida’s 67 counties.

Forecasters predicted that this hurricane season, running from June 1 to November 30, would be busy. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said there could be up to 25 named storms in 2024, with eight to 13 potentially becoming hurricanes. Debby was the fourth.

Scientists believe that climate change might be making slow-moving hurricanes like Debby more common. As the world heats unevenly, it causes changes in the atmospheric patterns that guide storms across the planet.
