The federal government announced on Sunday that it plans to block the passports of over 2,000 people caught begging abroad. Authorities have asked the Ministry of External Affairs for detailed information about these individuals, and lists are being made from Pakistani missions around the world.
Official sources say the passports of those begging overseas will be invalid for seven years. Government officials explained that begging in other countries not only looks bad for Pakistan but also harms the dignity of its citizens.
“Beggars travelling abroad bring disgrace to the nation,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, stressing the need for strong action.
The government also plans to block the passports of agents who help people go abroad to beg. Many beggars travel to countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq pretending to be on pilgrimage or Umrah, and then start begging.
The Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of External Affairs are working together to create a policy to address this issue. Collecting data on people begging abroad is the first step towards putting effective measures in place.
