GB Floods 2025: Nine Killed, Hundreds of Homes Destroyed in Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster

GB Floods 2025: Massive Destruction in Gilgit-Baltistan, Nine Confirmed Dead

GILGIT – The ongoing GB floods 2025 have turned into a major humanitarian crisis, with at least nine people confirmed dead—including two women and two children—as relentless monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc across Gilgit-Baltistan.

Speaking to the media on Friday, government spokesperson Faizullah Firaq confirmed the casualties and revealed that 10 to 12 individuals are still missing, as search and rescue operations intensify.

The catastrophe has left a trail of destruction in its wake, with more than 500 homes reduced to rubble and over 12 kilometers of roads destroyed. The region’s fragile infrastructure has collapsed under the weight of torrential downpours, triggering landslides and flash floods.

Widespread Damage and Displacement

Among the most affected areas is District Diamer, which has reported the heaviest loss in terms of both human lives and property. According to local officials:

  • 27 bridges have been washed away.
  • 22 vehicles have been swept into flood channels.
  • Several livestock shelters and shops have collapsed.
  • Thousands of feet of timber have been carried off by floodwaters.

Over a dozen residents have sustained injuries, and hundreds more have been displaced as they flee to safer areas.

Pakistan Army Leads Rescue Efforts

In the face of this natural disaster, the Pakistan Army has taken a frontline role in rescue and relief efforts. More than 300 stranded tourists and locals have already been rescued, with helicopters and boats deployed to inaccessible regions.

Search operations are ongoing to locate those still missing, with military and local authorities working round-the-clock under extreme conditions.

Nationwide Monsoon Impact

While Gilgit-Baltistan faces the brunt of the flooding, the situation is grim nationwide. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA):

  • 13 deaths were reported across Pakistan in the past 24 hours.
  • Punjab recorded the highest number of casualties (7), followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (3).
  • Islamabad and Azad Jammu and Kashmir also reported fatalities due to rain-related incidents.

The NDMA has issued fresh alerts, warning of continued heavy rainfall in several parts of the country. Citizens are advised to avoid riverbanks, hilly terrain, and landslide-prone zones during the ongoing monsoon season.

Humanitarian Crisis Looms

With more than 500 homes destroyed and critical infrastructure shattered, emergency shelters and relief supplies are urgently needed in Gilgit-Baltistan. Local NGOs, volunteer groups, and the armed forces are coordinating efforts, but access remains a major challenge due to washed-out roads and bridges.

Electricity and communication lines in several remote valleys have also been cut off, further complicating rescue logistics.

Conclusion

The GB floods 2025 are shaping up to be one of the worst natural disasters to hit Northern Pakistan in recent years. As monsoon rains continue to batter the region, both the human and material toll is expected to rise.
