ECP Directs Political Parties to Submit Applications for Election Symbols Ahead of General Polls

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued instructions to political parties, urging them to submit applications for the allocation of election symbols in anticipation of the upcoming general polls in the country, which are expected to be held after October. The electoral body has set a deadline of July 19 for the submission of these applications, requiring them to be accompanied by the signature of the party leader.

In its directive, the ECP emphasized the importance of attaching a list of symbol preferences along with the applications, underscoring the necessity of the party leader’s signature. Additionally, the election commission stipulated that each application must include the address of the political party’s headquarters.

Upon receiving the applications, the ECP will assess the eligibility of the respective parties. It has also instructed parties to resubmit the applications they had previously submitted for the elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) back in February. The electoral watchdog clarified that incomplete applications or those submitted via fax will not be considered. Furthermore, applications submitted prior to the specified date will not be accepted.

The ECP emphasized the mandatory requirement of an affidavit, as per Section 206 of the Election Act 2017, which must be submitted alongside the applications.

Ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process is of utmost importance, and the allocation of election symbols plays a crucial role in this regard. Political parties use these symbols to represent their identity and garner support from voters. The process of assigning symbols is carefully regulated to prevent any undue advantage or confusion among voters.

By setting a deadline for the submission of applications and emphasizing the need for compliance with the prescribed guidelines, the ECP aims to streamline the process and ensure that all political parties have an equal opportunity to secure their preferred symbols.

The allocation of election symbols is a critical aspect of the electoral process, as it helps voters identify and differentiate between the various political parties and candidates. It is essential for maintaining transparency, facilitating voter decision-making, and upholding the democratic principles of free and fair elections.

The ECP’s directive serves as a reminder to political parties to promptly fulfil the necessary requirements for symbol allocation. As the general polls draw nearer, it is crucial for parties to adhere to the designated timeline and guidelines specified by the electoral body.

In conclusion, the ECP’s instruction to political parties to submit applications for election symbols marks a crucial step in preparing for the upcoming general polls. Adhering to the specified guidelines and deadlines is essential to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process that upholds the principles of democracy.
