Internationally recognized cardiac surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan has officially taken charge of a leading heart institute in Punjab and held a meeting with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to discuss the future of cardiac healthcare in the province.
During the meeting, the chief minister welcomed Dr Khan’s decision to relocate from the United Kingdom and contribute his expertise to Pakistan’s medical sector. She acknowledged his move as a meaningful step toward strengthening healthcare services, particularly for underserved communities.
Discussions focused on operational and administrative planning for the Jinnah Institute of Cardiology, a newly developed facility aimed at expanding access to specialized heart treatment.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the institute would be developed into a modern, high-standard medical center equipped to handle complex cardiac cases. She also highlighted the government’s broader goal of improving healthcare access across Punjab.
The provincial leadership reiterated its ambition to position Punjab as a destination for international patients by upgrading medical infrastructure and services.
Originally from Jhelum, Dr Khan began his medical journey at King Edward Medical University before continuing his training and career in the UK.
He became widely known beyond the medical field due to his association with Princess Diana in the 1990s, after they met at the Royal Brompton Hospital during a hospital visit.
Dr Khan’s return is being seen as a significant development for Pakistan’s healthcare system, particularly in cardiology, as authorities aim to raise standards and expand access to quality treatment nationwide.
