Coalition govt to challenge SC verdict on Punjab, KP elections

  • Nawaz Sharif insists to file reference against SC three-member bench for verdict in the elections delay case.

Islamabad: The coalition government decided to file another resolution against the Supreme Court’s verdict in the National Assembly today.

The sources said that the government would challenge the verdict of the top court and would pray to form a full court for hearing of the matter.  They said that the government made a new strategy that they would verify their move against the SC verdict through the parliament.

The sources privy to the development said that the government decided to come up with the strong reaction against the situation arising out of legal battle.  PML-N Supremo and former three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif insisted to file reference against the Supreme Court three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Muneeb Akhtar.

Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, the head of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) also asked the government to stand firm against the Supreme Court verdict, saying that it was the only way to deal with the developing political situation.

The coalition government would also table another resolution in the National Assembly today against the top court’s verdict.

The session would be held today and all members of the national assembly were directed to ensure their participation in it.

The development took place a day after the Election Commission of Pakistan decided to comply with the verdict of the apex court and issued schedule for elections in Punjab.  The ECP set April 10 as the date to file nomination papers while the election tribunal was asked to decide the matters on April 17. The Electoral symbol, it said, would be issued on April.

On other hand, the PTI marked the day as “Yaum-e-Tashakur” and held a gathering at Liberty Chowk, Lahore, where the party’s chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan addressed the leaders, workers. Imran Khan said that they would come up with strong reaction if the coalition government made any attempt to delay the elections.

“Get ready,” said Imran Khan while addressing the whole nation in his address at Liberty chowk. He asked the people to start preparation for upcoming general elections, saying that if they did not get ready this time then the history would not forgive them.

Khan also reiterated his stance to hold the powerful people of the country accountable for what they did with the country.

He was of the view that the coalition partners were running away from the elections, because they knew that their defeat was imminent and they knew that they would lose public support in the upcoming elections.
