CJP Bandial asks PTI, coalition govt to resume dialogues

CJP Bandial asks that the coalition government and PTI continue talks.

ISLAMABAD: The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial has urged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government to resume talks with the opposition. The call was made during a hearing of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) plea to review an order that had held the ECP responsible for conducting elections in Punjab on May 14.

The ECP had appealed the April 4 ruling by the three-member bench, comprising Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar, that had deemed the Commission’s decision to hold elections in Punjab on October 8, instead of April 30, illegal.

During the hearing, the CJP expressed his concern over the way political power was being used and the current unrest in the country, which included the burning of national institutions and assets. He also criticized the ECP for not maintaining the same stance in the main petition, saying that the federal government should have come to the court, and that the situation required the highest standard of morality. He asked the government and opposition to resume negotiations, saying that the Supreme Court exists to defend the rights of the people of Pakistan.

The Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) agreed with the CJP, saying that talks should begin immediately as there were sane voices on both sides. The CJP also directed the AGP to bring a solution to the narrative being created by both sides.
