China Responds to NATO’s Accusations Over Russian Support

China’s foreign minister Wang Yi responded strongly to NATO’s accusations that Beijing is supporting Russia in its war against Ukraine, calling them unfounded. In a call with his Dutch counterpart, Wang warned NATO against escalating tensions.

NATO leaders had gathered in Washington DC and issued a declaration accusing China of significantly aiding Russia’s defense industry. They demanded China cease all support, including dual-use materials that can serve both civilian and military purposes. Western nations allege China has supplied drone and missile technology and satellite imagery to Russia, with a large portion of Russia’s machine tools and microelectronics now coming from China.

The accusations also included claims of cyber and hybrid activities aimed at Nato countries. US President Joe Biden, in a press conference, emphasized discussing consequences for China’s actions, suggesting potential economic repercussions and reduced investments from European allies.

Biden noted Russia’s efforts to procure weapons from China and North Korea, prompting NATO to consider policies turning Western nations into hubs for arms production and innovation in response.
