CDA Removes ‘Golden Hands’ Sculpture in Islamabad After Online Backlash

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has removed the recently installed ‘Golden Hands’ sculpture along Margalla Avenue in Islamabad following widespread online backlash and speculation over its symbolism.

Sculpture Sparked Debate and Memes

The striking artwork, featuring two giant golden hands holding two globe-like spheres, was installed by a private developer as part of an urban beautification effort. However, it quickly became the centre of attention on social media, with thousands of users sharing memes and heated debates about what the structure really represented.

Some netizens hailed it as an ambitious piece symbolising Pakistan’s growing global influence, while others criticised it as an unnecessary and poorly conceived landmark that clashed with Islamabad’s natural aesthetic.

CDA Moves Swiftly After Viral Uproar

As the online chatter grew, CDA officials took swift action. Initially, the sculpture was covered with cloth, likely in a bid to calm public reaction. Within hours, heavy machinery and labour teams were deployed to dismantle and remove the installation altogether.

Despite the controversy, the CDA has yet to issue an official explanation for why the sculpture was removed just days after its installation.

Silence Raises More Questions

The lack of an official statement has fuelled even more speculation online. Many residents are questioning whether the piece violated city planning rules or if the backlash simply forced authorities to reconsider its placement.

Growing Scrutiny Over Public Installations

Islamabad’s public spaces have increasingly come under the spotlight amid calls for better urban planning, public consultation, and contextual art that resonates with local culture and environment.

Meanwhile, the city recently witnessed high-profile actions against other illicit activities, including the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency’s (NCCIA) raid on a scam call centre, which resulted in the arrest of more than 65 people, including foreign nationals.

What’s Next?

Urban planners and civic activists have urged the CDA to develop clearer guidelines for public art and installations to ensure transparency, cultural relevance, and community approval.

So far, the private developer who installed the Golden Hands sculpture has also not released any statement on the removal or whether they plan to relocate the piece elsewhere.
