Efficient Use of AI Remains Key Challenge, Says Musadik Malik

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Musadik Malik has said that while operational artificial intelligence (AI) agents have not yet been introduced in Pakistan, they are expected to emerge in the coming years, stressing that technological advancement must remain inclusive amid growing climate threats.

Speaking at the Pakistan Governance Forum 2026, the minister highlighted that the prime minister had provided a clear policy direction on technological progress and that related proposals had been consolidated accordingly.

Malik noted that countries such as Japan, Singapore and China are already actively developing AI agents, while Pakistan is currently working to build its capacity in the field.

He identified efficiency as the primary technical challenge in the effective deployment of AI systems. According to the minister, ensuring that AI solutions operate efficiently and deliver tangible benefits remains a key hurdle.

Emphasising inclusive development, Malik said policies must prioritise the poorest segments of society to prevent them from being left behind during technological transitions. He added that the government is focusing on integration strategies to address the “last-mile problem,” ensuring that digital services and reforms reach citizens at the grassroots level.

Linking technology policy to environmental concerns, the minister pointed to the devastating floods in recent years as evidence of Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change. He said rural communities, farmers, children, and residents of mountainous and urban areas have been disproportionately affected.

Malik reiterated that although Pakistan contributes minimally to global carbon emissions, it faces severe climate-related risks, including glacier melt, irregular rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events, underscoring the need to align technological innovation with climate resilience strategies.
