Philippine Coast Guard Rushes to Contain Oil Spill Near Manila

The Philippine Coast Guard is getting ready to use floating barriers and suction hoses to stop an oil spill from reaching Manila. They are trying to contain the oil spill from the MT Terra Nova, which capsized on Thursday due to heavy monsoon rains.

Officials say the leak is coming from the ship’s engine, not its cargo tank, which was carrying about 1.5 million liters of industrial fuel. A large spill, stretching several kilometers, has been detected, and there are concerns it could become the worst oil spill in the country’s history if not contained.

The coast guard is preparing for the worst, according to spokesman Rear Admiral Armand Balilo. He mentioned that the industrial fuel could harm the marine environment and potentially reach Manila.

The monsoon rains, worsened by Typhoon Gaemi, also caused widespread flooding in Metro Manila and its suburbs. The MT Terra Nova was one of two ships that sank during the typhoon, with the other sinking off Taiwan’s southwestern coast. The Terra Nova was heading for Iloilo in central Philippines when it went down with 17 crew members on board. One person died, but 16 were rescued. Officials are investigating if the bad weather played a role in the sinking.
