In Islamabad, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has introduced a new electricity tariff structure starting July 1, 2024. This new design includes monthly fixed charges for residential consumers.
NEPRA has proposed fixed charges ranging from Rs. 200 to Rs. 1,000 per month in electricity bills for residential consumers. Here’s how it breaks down:
- Consumers using 301-400 units per month will pay Rs. 200 as fixed charges.
- Consumers using 401-500 units per month will pay Rs. 400.
- Consumers using 501-600 units per month will pay Rs. 600.
- Consumers using 601-700 units per month will pay Rs. 800.
- Consumers using above 700 units per month will pay Rs. 1,000.
Residential consumers with Time of Use (ToU) meters will also pay Rs. 1,000 per month as fixed charges.
For commercial consumers with a load of less than 5kW, the fixed charge will be Rs. 1,000 per month. However, for those with a load of 5kW and above, the fixed charge will increase from the current Rs. 500 to Rs. 2,000 per month, marking a 300 percent rise.
Currently, electricity bills consist of 72 percent fixed charges and 28 percent variable charges based on consumption.
NEPRA’s announcement follows the recent Budget 2024-25, which increased the average electricity tariff to Rs. 35.50 per unit from the previous Rs. 29.78 per unit, adding to the financial burden on citizens already impacted by inflation.
