Nawaz Sharif, the leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), spoke out on Monday, commending the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) coalition government for averting a potential economic crisis that could have led to exorbitant petrol prices in Pakistan. Speaking via video link from London during a consultative meeting of his party, Nawaz Sharif emphasized the PML-N’s commitment to rescuing Pakistan from an economic collapse and its willingness to bear the consequences for the nation’s sake.
According to Sharif, the PML-N’s sacrifices have played a crucial role in preventing Pakistan from defaulting on its financial obligations. He expressed his confidence that his party would achieve success in the upcoming elections.
During the meeting, Nawaz Sharif also placed blame on several high-ranking individuals, including former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, ex-Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief General (retd) Faiz Hamid, and former chief justice Mian Saqib Nisar, for the current state of affairs in the country.
Sharif lamented the current economic hardships faced by ordinary Pakistanis, citing rising food prices and heavy electricity bills as examples. He compared the present situation to his time in power in 2017 when essential commodities like flour, ghee, and sugar were readily available to the public at lower prices.
PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz expressed her anticipation for Nawaz Sharif’s return on October 21, calling it a historic moment and suggesting that it would mark the end of the Panama and Iqama controversies once and for all.
The meeting was attended by prominent PML-N members, including Vice President Hamza Shehbaz, General Secretary Ahsan Iqbal, and Punjab President Rana Sanaullah Khan, along with former members of the National and provincial assemblies, party officials, and ticket-holders from various divisions and districts.
Maryam Nawaz provided insights into the preparations for Nawaz Sharif’s return, revealing the establishment of a central facilitation control center at the party’s main secretariat to oversee the arrangements.
Hamza Shehbaz, another senior PML-N leader, highlighted Nawaz Sharif’s historical role in making Pakistan a nuclear-armed nation and expressed hopes that his return to power would alleviate the nation’s inflation woes. He questioned why inflation had surged after Nawaz Sharif’s tenure when the former premier had focused on providing relief to the people.
