President Biden meets with U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street

President Joe Biden embarked on the first full day of his trip abroad with a visit to London, focusing on bolstering the “special relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom. The President met with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street, discussing various topics, including Ukraine, where both leaders have closely coordinated efforts. This meeting served as a prelude to the high-stakes NATO summit scheduled for the following day. President Biden also had his first meeting with King Charles III since his coronation, discussing climate change and strengthening the personal bond between the two leaders.

President Joe Biden commenced his visit to London with a meeting at 10 Downing Street alongside Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The leaders engaged in discussions covering a broad range of issues, including Ukraine, where they have closely coordinated their efforts. President Biden expressed his appreciation for the strong alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom, emphasizing their shared commitment to addressing global challenges.

Amidst their discussions, a rare point of disagreement emerged between the United States and the United Kingdom regarding the issue of cluster munitions. The US announced its decision to send cluster munitions to Ukraine, a move that contradicts the UK’s commitment as a signatory to a convention that prohibits the production or use of such weapons. Prime Minister Sunak, highlighting the UK’s position, emphasized the country’s continued support for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion but stressed that they had provided assistance in the form of heavy battle tanks and long-range weapons.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan addressed concerns about potential fractures in the alliance due to the cluster munitions disagreement. Sullivan asserted that both Prime Minister Sunak and President Biden remain strategically aligned on Ukraine, emphasizing the broader picture of their shared objectives. While the UK adheres to its legal obligations as a signatory to the Oslo Convention, discouraging the use of cluster munitions, Sullivan expressed confidence in the unity between the US and its coalition partners, assuring that the decision would not cast doubt on their commitment to Ukraine.

President Biden marked an important moment during his visit by engaging with King Charles III, his first in-person meeting with the monarch since ascending to the throne. The discussions at Windsor Castle focused on climate change, a cause that King Charles is passionately committed to and that President Biden has identified as an existential threat. The meeting provided an opportunity for the President to deepen the personal bond with King Charles and collaborate on driving climate progress and action.

In their efforts to address climate change, President Biden, King Charles III, and US climate envoy John Kerry held a meeting with private sector leaders. The event aimed to explore ways to mobilize private capital for clean energy deployment, carbon emissions mitigation, and supporting developing countries in adapting to climate change impacts. President Biden encouraged private sector participants to fulfil their responsibilities while highlighting the importance of public investment. The meeting underscored the commitment of both the US and the UK to driving climate progress.

Following his engagements in the UK, President Biden departed for Vilnius, Lithuania, to attend the NATO summit. The gathering holds particular significance amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Russia’s recent failed coup attempt, posing a substantial threat to global stability. After the NATO Summit, President Biden will travel to Helsinki, Finland, where he will meet with the leaders of Nordic countries, including Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, and Denmark. The summit provides an opportunity to demonstrate support for these countries and their shared goals.

President Biden’s visit to the United Kingdom aimed to strengthen the special relationship between the US and the UK. The meetings with Prime Minister Sunak and King Charles III focused on critical issues such as Ukraine and climate change.
