Kampala, Uganda – Herbert Baitwababo, a resident of Uganda, has taken legal action against the administrator of a WhatsApp group, Allan Asinguza, after being removed from the group. Baitwababo filed a lawsuit in front of a magistrate in Kampala, claiming lack of transparency and requesting an audit report regarding the funds collected from registered members since the group’s establishment in 2017.
Background:
The lawsuit stems from Baitwababo’s removal from the WhatsApp group “Buyanja My Roots.” The group, which was originally created to assist with charitable causes, offer condolences, and provide support to individuals, had a specific focus on aiding residents of the Buyanja sub-county in the Rukungiri district. Over the years, the group aimed to help and support individuals residing in that particular area.
Allegations of Lack of Transparency and Audit Request:
According to Baitwababo, on May 16, 2023, he sent a letter to the group’s administrator, Allan Asinguza, expressing concerns about the lack of transparency in the management of funds collected from registered members. In his letter, Baitwababo requested an audit report to gain clarity regarding the allocation and utilization of the funds since the group’s inception in 2017.
Baitwababo alleges that his request for transparency and an audit report was met with resistance from Asinguza and other members of the group’s administration. Furthermore, he claims that this resistance ultimately led to his removal from the WhatsApp group.
