KARACHI – Tensions flared on Thursday as clashes broke out between workers of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamat-e-Islami (JI) outside the Arts Council, the designated polling station for the mayoral election. The clashes occurred after Murtaza Wahab of the PPP emerged victorious, defeating JI’s Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman.
Prior to the election, the JI, supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had expressed concerns about potential interference in the results. They claimed that the PPP had “abducted” PTI’s union committee chairmen in order to rig the election, but the ruling party angrily refuted this claim.
As a result of the clashes, the road from Shaheen Complex to MR Kiyani Road was blocked, vehicles were damaged, and one person sustained injuries. Law enforcement authorities intervened to separate the rival party workers, leading to several arrests.
Sindh Election Commissioner Ijaz Anwar issued a warning, stating that action would be taken against any individual attempting to disrupt the peaceful polling process. The Rangers have been instructed to apprehend those resorting to violence.
The mayoral contest primarily involved Wahab and Rehman, as all other candidates had withdrawn their nomination papers. Salman Abdullah Murad of the PPP and Saifuddin of the JI were the two candidates for deputy mayor, respectively.
The Election of Karachi Mayor Election Outcome
Out of the 303 elected members, 33 were absent on the day of the election. Additionally, three PTI members, who had been arrested following the May 9 riots, were transported to the polling station in an armored personnel carrier.
The PPP, with 155 seats, is the largest party in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation City Council. Although the party garnered support from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, their combined strength fell short of the simple majority required to elect their mayor.
The JI and PTI are the second and third largest parties in the city council, with 130 and 63 seats respectively. With the PTI supporting the JI, their combined votes appeared to be 193, surpassing the simple majority in the 367-member council.
However, a forward bloc within the PTI abstained from voting, leading to their absence during the polling. Consequently, Naeem secured 160 votes, while Wahab emerged as the winner with 173 votes.
Following the announcement of the results, the PPP criticized the JI for aligning with individuals involved in the May 9 riots. Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon expressed his disappointment and accused the JI of supporting those engaged in violent activities.
Meanwhile, Rehman raised concerns about the whereabouts of over 30 elected members, questioning the responsibility of the returning officer to ensure their presence. The PTI denounced the “rigged mayoral contests” and accused the PPP of prioritizing rigging over fair elections, citing the alleged arrests of elected members as evidence.
Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani, prior to the voting, confidently stated that the 173 members supporting Wahab were present in the hall. He shared a video message congratulating Wahab and Murad on their victory, even before the release of unofficial results. According to Ghani, Wahab secured 173 votes, while Rehman managed to secure only 160 votes.
As tensions escalate following the clashes and allegations, it remains crucial for all parties involved to prioritize peaceful engagement and respect the democratic process. The successful governance of Karachi and the resolution of its challenges require collaborative efforts and a commitment to the betterment of the city.
