- UK Army Chief acknowledges Pakistani Army for its sacrifices in the war against terrorism.
General Sir Nicholas Patrick Carter, the Chief of General Staff (CGS) of the UK Army, met with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir on Wednesday and expressed appreciation for the sacrifices made by the Pakistan Army in the fight against terrorism. The meeting took place at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, as stated in a press release by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Upon his arrival at the GHQ, General Sir Sanders paid tribute to the martyrs by laying a floral wreath at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada memorials. A well-turned-out contingent of the Pakistan Army presented a guard of honour to the visiting dignitary, according to the military’s media wing.
During their meeting, both sides discussed regional security issues and areas of mutual interest. The ISPR highlighted that General Sir Sanders recognized the sacrifices and accomplishments of the Pakistan Army in the battle against terrorism, as well as their efforts to bring peace and stability to the region.
Furthermore, General Sir Sanders also held a meeting with Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza at the Joint Staff Headquarters in Rawalpindi earlier in the day.
The British army chief’s visit to Pakistan, termed as a “defence engagement” visit, began on Monday and will last for five days. The ISPR previously stated that this visit comes nearly a year after Pakistan experienced devastating floods, which submerged almost one-third of the country and affected around 33 million people. The UK’s Ministry of Defence played a direct role in providing assistance for flood relief operations by airlifting eight boats and ten portable generators, upon the request of Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, as mentioned in an earlier statement by the ISPR.
The focus of the visit will include discussions on bilateral military cooperation in response to climate change-related crises.
