Pakistan Begins with ‘National Artificial Intelligence Policy’

Pakistan has recently introduced a comprehensive policy framework aimed at fostering the responsible and equitable utilization of artificial intelligence (AI). With a vision to enhance its AI readiness and improve its standing in the global AI index, Pakistan’s National AI Policy encompasses key aspects such as awareness, skill development, standardization, and ethical use of AI. The policy’s evidence-based and target-oriented approach, along with its focus on user-centricity and forward-thinking, underscores its overarching and objective nature.

Balanced Interventions:

The National AI Policy focuses on implementing balanced interventions on both the demand and supply sides of AI. To facilitate the development, testing, deployment, and scaling of AI solutions, the policy advocates for the establishment of dedicated research and innovation centers. These centers will not only enhance governance and manage the impact of AI but also drive economic growth and improve the lives of citizens.

Awareness and Skill Development:

Raising awareness and understanding of AI technologies and their benefits among the populace is a key priority of the policy. To achieve this, the policy emphasizes sector-specific cooperation facilitated by national IT boards. These collaborations will drive the transformation of industries by conducting awareness campaigns and implementing training programs to equip the workforce with the necessary competencies for participating in the AI economy.

Digitalization and Standardization of Data:

While the successful implementation of IoT cloud-based services poses a challenge due to the availability and standardization of digital data, Pakistan recognizes the vast untapped potential in government and public organizations’ data repositories. The policy aims to address this issue by promoting digitalization and standardization of data.

Centre of Excellence in AI (CoE-AI):

To support these efforts, the policy establishes a Centre of Excellence in AI (CoE-AI) that will provide subsidized IoT cloud-based services and enhanced learning experiences for academia. Furthermore, the Center of Excellence in AI (CoE-AI) will play a crucial role in promoting the adoption of IoT-based applications, enhancing the quality of cloud and IoT technologies, and providing advanced facilities for predictive analytics across diverse industries. Collaboration with local and international companies will be encouraged to provide IoT-based cloud services, fostering innovation and growth.

Investment in Research and Development:

To build in-house AI capabilities based on local data, the policy emphasizes investing in research and development infrastructure. The policy advocates for the creation of research organizations, providing funding support, implementing regulatory measures, and fostering partnerships with universities and research institutions. Additionally, training programs will be introduced to nurture the essential technical expertise required in the field.

Ethical Considerations and Accountability:

The policy proposes the establishment of an AI regulatory directorate to ensure responsible AI use. This Directorate will focus on ethical considerations, transparency, and accountability, with a particular emphasis on preventing discrimination against individuals or groups.

Addressing Socio-economic Challenges:

The National AI Policy acknowledges the significant transformative potential of AI in tackling social and economic challenges. Its objectives include enhancing healthcare outcomes, increasing educational accessibility, and addressing food security concerns through the application of AI technologies.

Equitable Distribution of AI Benefits:

A core principle of the policy is ensuring the equitable distribution of AI’s benefits across society. By actively addressing concerns surrounding bias and discrimination, the policy ensures that the benefits of AI are not disproportionately concentrated in the hands of a privileged few.

AI Policy

Pakistan’s National AI Policy provides a comprehensive framework for promoting the responsible and equitable adoption of AI. By emphasizing awareness, skill development, standardization, and ethical use of AI, the policy seeks to enhance Pakistan’s AI readiness and global ranking. Through targeted interventions, investment in research and development, and the establishment of an AI regulatory directorate, Pakistan aims to create an enabling ecosystem that drives economic growth, job creation, and improved societal well-being while ensuring that AI benefits are shared by all.
