Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has announced that his party will hold daily rallies until the Punjab Assembly elections on May 14, 2023. The PTI held rallies across several cities, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and Peshawar, to support the Constitution, Supreme Court, and Chief Justice of Pakistan. The announcement comes amid a standoff between the government and the higher judiciary on the date of elections in Punjab and a recently passed act related to the chief justice’s powers.

Imran Khan stated that if elections were not held, he would come out and prepare the public to protest. The PTI chairman emphasized that when a country’s constitution is violated, the justice system and the rule of law end. It means that the nation loses its freedom and becomes slaves. The PTI aims to hold rallies to stand with the constitution and against the way the incumbent coalition government puts pressure on and propagates against the chief justice and judges.

The Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar recently called Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the foreign minister of Pakistan, a “promoter, justifier, and spokesperson of a terrorism industry, which is the mainstay of Pakistan.” Khan referred to Jaishankar’s statements as a “matter of shame for all of us” and said that inviting a guest and insulting him reflects on the host country.

The top court ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold polls for the Punjab Assembly on May 14 and the government to release Rs21 billion in this regard. However, the government has failed to issue the amount despite repeated directives from the SC. The PTI submitted a report to the Supreme Court requesting it to ensure the implementation of its April 4 verdict to hold polls in Punjab on May 14.

The government has notified the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023, which aimed to curtail the chief justice’s powers to take suo motu notices and form benches. The SC directed the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan to produce copies of the proceedings of the standing committee meeting during which the legislation was discussed. The National Assembly previously passed a motion to condemn what it stated was an aggressive attempt by the Supreme Court to usurp the parliament’s authority.

In conclusion, the PTI’s decision to hold daily rallies until the Punjab Assembly elections on May 14 is a crucial step towards ensuring that Pakistan remains a democratic country that respects its constitution and rule of law. The government and higher judiciary need to resolve their differences and work together for the betterment of the country. It is essential to conduct free and fair elections in Punjab to strengthen democracy in Pakistan. The PTI’s rallies and protests should be peaceful and non-violent to avoid any unfortunate incidents that could harm the country’s stability and progress.
