4 Children Killed After Drowning in Pond in KP’s Lakki Marwat
LAKKI MARWAT: In a heartbreaking tragedy, four children lost their lives after drowning in a pond in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district on Sunday, according to local police and rescue officials.
The incident took place in the Wanda Meer Alam area on the outskirts of Lakki Marwat city. Reports said the children, aged between 8 and 12, were playing near the pond when they accidentally fell into the deep water.
Local residents and Rescue 1122 teams rushed to the scene after being alerted by villagers. Despite rescue efforts, all four children could not be saved. Their bodies were later retrieved from the pond and handed over to their families.
Grief and Condolences
The tragic drowning has plunged the entire community into grief. Locals demanded that the district administration take urgent steps to ensure such incidents do not happen again, including fencing of open water ponds and creating safe play areas for children.
A local elder expressed sorrow over the incident, saying that lack of supervision and safety measures often turn natural water bodies into death traps for children during summer.
Previous Similar Incidents
This is not the first time Lakki Marwat has witnessed such a tragedy. In recent years, several similar drowning incidents have occurred due to lack of proper fencing or safety barriers around ponds and canals.
Earlier this month, parts of Swat and Balakot also reported casualties related to unsafe rivers and flood channels. For example, read how a tourist was swept away in Kunhar River in Balakot while three others were injured when their car fell into the river.
Administration’s Response
The district administration has expressed deep regret and has promised stricter measures for the safety of children. Officials said instructions have been issued to local municipal authorities to fence off dangerous ponds and issue safety advisories to parents and communities.
Rescue 1122 also urged parents to educate children about the dangers of playing near deep water bodies during the summer months.
Safety Tips for Parents
- Always supervise children near ponds, canals, or rivers.
- Educate kids on water safety.
- Report any unprotected water bodies near residential areas to local authorities.
