Understanding the Al-Qadir Trust case that led to Imran Khan’s arrest”

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and Chairman of PTI Imran Khan was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the Al-Qadir University case. Imran Khan came to appear in the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday when he was arrested by Rangers, under the arrest warrant issued by NAB Chairman.

The case pertains to the foundation stone laying of Al Qadir University by then-Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 5, 2019. The university is a part of the Al-Qadir University Project Trust, which purchased land from a private housing society that is now being investigated by NAB.

The government has accused Imran Khan and his family of being trustees of the Al-Qadir University Trust and making a donation of Rs500 million to the university while acquiring 450 kanals of land. The private housing society also allegedly gave 200 kanals of land to Farah Gogi, but there is no record of these transactions, as the university still does not exist.

There are claims that the land was obtained from Bahria Town in exchange for granting leniency on Bahria Town’s seized funds in the United Kingdom. The government has also made public the documents of the Al-Qadir University Trust, according to which, Bahria Town donated 450 kanals of land in the Jhelum Sohawa district to the trust on March 24, 2021. The deed was signed by former First Lady Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, on behalf of the Al Qadir University Project Trust as a trustee.

The NAB’s decision to arrest Imran Khan also raises questions about the impartiality of the accountability process and the role of the government in protecting its citizens’ rights.

Al-Qadir University case highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in government projects and transactions. The arrest of Imran Khan and ongoing investigations by NAB into the case are essential steps towards ensuring justice and upholding the rule of law.
