Martyrs Respect Day: PM says ‘tragic’ events of May 9 a ‘wake-up call for us’

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described the events of May 9 as a “tragic and heart-rending” wake-up call for Pakistan, emphasizing the need to identify and expose those who seek to destroy the country’s foundations. He made these remarks during ceremonies held to commemorate Youm-i-Takreem Shuhada-i-Pakistan, a day dedicated to honoring the country’s martyrs. The Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, had previously condemned the violent protests that erupted following the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan and announced that tribute would be paid to the martyrs on May 25.

Several commemorative ceremonies took place at martyrs’ memorials, including one at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi attended by COAS Munir and his predecessor, retired General Qamar Javed Bajwa. Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed his solidarity with the martyrs’ families and paid glowing tributes to the heroes and martyrs, stating that the tragic incidents of May 9 were not just a protest turned violent, but rather the result of sinister plans.

According to the prime minister, the events leading up to the shameful incidents were evident, as certain individuals’ thirst for power drove them to unprecedented actions. The prime minister condemned the targeting, desecration, and destruction of the monuments of shuhada (martyrs) and the attacks on symbols of the state. He stressed that such miscreants had attacked the very idea and identity of Pakistan, giving reasons for the country’s enemies to celebrate.

Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the nation’s determination to protect the honor of their martyrs and called for the identification and exposure of individuals seeking to weaken the foundations of Pakistan. He stated that May 9 had drawn a line between the protectors and builders of Pakistan and those who wished to undermine it. The prime minister reiterated the nation’s pledge to uphold the honor and respect of the country’s martyrs, highlighting the spiritual covenant between the people and the martyrs as the essence of Pakistan’s existence.
