Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq Removed from PCB

After the poor performance of the national team in the T20 World Cup 2024, Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq have reportedly been removed from the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection committee. Mohammad Yousuf, Asad Shafiq, and Bilal Asif remain part of the seven-member panel, which also includes the team captain and head coach.

Sources say the PCB management lost confidence in Riaz and Razzaq and had not considered their opinions for some time. Their influence was significant in selecting the T20 World Cup squad, and they supported players who did not perform well.

In March, the board reorganized the men’s national selection committee to bring more transparency, but the team selected by the panel has not performed well in any series since then.

After the T20 World Cup failure, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced plans for major changes to improve the team’s performance and has started consultations. On Tuesday, he held two important meetings. First, he met with Pakistan’s white-ball coach Gary Kirsten and red-ball coach Jason Gillespie to discuss key issues. They decided to create a comprehensive plan to improve the team’s batting, bowling, and fielding.

Earlier, Naqvi met with more than two dozen former and current players to discuss the future of cricket in Pakistan. He began the meeting with a presentation titled “Pathway to Pakistan Cricket,” explaining the steps a player goes through to reach the national team.

PCB officials present included COO Salman Naseer, Director of High Performance Nadeem Khan, Director of International Cricket Usman Wahla, Director of Domestic Cricket Operations Abdullah Khurram Niazi, and Member of the Selection Committee Bilal Afzal.
