Two Mpox Cases Confirmed at Multan Hospital, Patients Kept in Isolation

MULTAN: Health authorities have confirmed two cases of mpox in Multan, with both patients currently undergoing treatment in isolation at Nishtar Hospital, officials said on Tuesday.

According to PCR tests conducted at a Punjab public health reference laboratory, mpox was confirmed in both individuals. Hospital officials said the patients are being closely monitored and necessary precautionary measures have been put in place.

The first patient is a 22-year-old transgender person from Mian Channu tehsil in Khanewal district, who was diagnosed on January 13, 2026, after developing fever and skin rashes. The second case involves a 20-year-old police constable from Muzaffargarh, whose infection was confirmed on February 2, also after the appearance of rash symptoms.

According to health officials, both patients were found to be co-infected with HIV, placing them at a higher risk of complications.

Hospital sources said the police constable attempted to leave the hospital before laboratory results were finalized but was stopped by Nishtar Hospital security staff. He was later shifted to Isolation Ward No. 27 for continued observation.

Medical Superintendent Dr Riwad Noor confirmed that neither patient has any recent travel history, ruling out immediate cross-border exposure.

In response to the confirmed cases, the health department has intensified surveillance in Multan and surrounding districts, directing hospitals and clinics to remain vigilant for symptoms consistent with mpox.

Health authorities, citing World Health Organization (WHO) guidance, noted that individuals with weakened immune systems, including those living with HIV, are more vulnerable to severe illness. The WHO advises avoiding close physical contact with infected persons, maintaining proper hygiene, and isolating confirmed cases until all lesions have healed.

Officials said contact tracing and preventive measures are underway to prevent further spread of the virus.
