Turkey makes historic onshore oil discovery
Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) has announced the discovery of the largest crude oil reserve onshore Turkey, estimated to hold 1 billion barrels of crude. The oil reserve was found in the southeastern province of Sirnak, which borders the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region in Iraq and Syria. This significant discovery is expected to boost Turkey’s energy independence and double the country’s current oil production.
According to TPAO, an exploration well was drilled and more than 162 meters of light oil-bearing reservoir with an API gravity of 41 was encountered. The well currently produces around 10,000 barrels of oil per day. The company plans to drill back-to-back appraisal wells and conduct well tests to develop a full-field development plan by the end of this year, with additional exploration activities scheduled for the second half of 2023.
The discovery of the oil reserve is a significant milestone for Turkey, which has struggled to achieve energy independence. Currently, the country relies heavily on oil imports, making it vulnerable to fluctuations in the global oil market. The production target of 100,000 barrels per day would go a long way in achieving Turkey’s energy security goals and reducing its dependence on foreign oil.
The news of the discovery has been met with excitement and optimism, with Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez calling it a “historic moment” for Turkey. He added that the government’s energy policies have played a crucial role in the exploration and development of domestic energy resources.
The discovery is also expected to have a positive impact on the Turkish economy, which has been struggling in recent years. The oil industry is a significant contributor to the country’s GDP and provides jobs for thousands of people. With the new reserve, Turkey’s oil industry is expected to grow significantly, attracting foreign investment and boosting economic growth.
However, there are concerns about the environmental impact of the oil production. Turkey is already facing significant environmental challenges, including air and water pollution, deforestation, and soil degradation. The extraction and transportation of oil can also have severe environmental consequences, such as oil spills and contamination of soil and water resources.
To address these concerns, TPAO has committed to implementing sustainable practices in its operations, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing waste and water usage. The company has also pledged to work closely with local communities to minimize the impact of its operations on the environment and surrounding ecosystems.

The discovery of the largest crude oil reserve onshore Turkey is a significant milestone for the country and is expected to have a positive impact on the economy and energy security. However, it is crucial to ensure that oil production is conducted in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner, taking into account the potential impacts on local communities and ecosystems. By implementing sustainable practices, TPAO can ensure that the benefits of the oil discovery are realized while minimizing the negative consequences.
