Trump ally Charlie Kirk shot dead at Utah campus event

UTAH: Charlie Kirk, a key ally of U.S. President Donald Trump and one of the most prominent conservative activists in America, was shot dead during a live event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The 31-year-old Turning Point USA co-founder was struck in the neck by a single bullet while addressing a large student gathering.

Videos from the scene show Kirk sitting under a tent with banners reading “The American Comeback” when a gunshot echoed through the courtyard. Within seconds, Kirk collapsed in his chair as blood gushed from his neck, sending the crowd into panic. Spectators screamed and fled the area as security rushed the conservative commentator away.

President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death in a post on Truth Social, calling him “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk.” He expressed condolences to Kirk’s wife Erika and his family, writing: “Charlie, we love you.” First Lady Melania Trump also joined the president in extending sympathies.

Utah’s Governor Spencer Cox said a person of interest had initially been taken into custody but was later released, according to FBI Director Kash Patel. Utah Valley University confirmed the shooting in an official statement, saying the shot appeared to have been fired from a building nearly 200 yards away. The campus was immediately closed.

Former Congressman Jason Chaffetz, who was at the rally, said the shooting occurred just as Kirk was answering a question about mass shooters. “Everybody hit the deck… people started screaming and running,” he told Fox News.

Charlie Kirk rose to national prominence in 2012 after founding Turning Point USA, a conservative youth movement that built a massive online following. With strong support from Trump, Kirk became a leading voice in U.S. politics, particularly in rallying young voters behind Republican causes. His outspoken advocacy of Christianity, anti-immigration policies, and conservative campus activism made him a polarizing figure admired by many on the right and criticized by opponents on the left.

Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. Right-wing commentator Tomi Lahren hailed Kirk as a “visionary” who inspired countless young conservatives. On the other hand, California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the shooting as “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible,” stressing that political violence must be rejected in every form.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk is being described as one of the most high-profile acts of political violence in recent U.S. history, intensifying debates over polarization, campus security, and the safety of political figures.
