Sindh issues COVID-19 alert ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations

As the holy month of Ramadan comes to a close, Muslims around the world are preparing for the joyous festival of Eid-ul-Fitr. However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has cast a shadow over the celebrations, prompting authorities to issue warnings and guidelines to ensure the safety of citizens. In Sindh, the government has taken to social media to alert the public regarding the emergence of new COVID-19 variants and the increased risk of transmission during the festivities.

The Sindh Health and Population Welfare Department has issued a notification listing all government-run hospitals administering the booster dose of Pfizer at Adults Vaccination Centres across the province’s 24 districts, which include Karachi, Hyderabad, and others. The government has urged citizens to follow the guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and to get vaccinated with booster shots ahead of Eid ul Fitr festivities.

“It is pertinent to follow WHO placed pandemic SOPs with complete adherence on the part of every citizen,” the government said in a tweet. The guidelines include maintaining social distance, wearing a mask in public and crowded areas, regularly washing hands with soap, avoiding larger gatherings, and seeking medical attention if symptoms related to flu, cough, or difficulty in breathing appear.

Furthermore, the government has advised people who received their last COVID-19 vaccination dose six to twelve months ago to get their follow-up COVID-19 vaccination dose at any of the established vaccination centres. This will enhance immunity against the deadly disease, particularly for the elderly and individuals with co-morbidities who are especially advised to get inoculated at home by calling immunisation teams.

As of April 21, the National Institute of Health in Islamabad has released the National Command and Operation Centre’s COVID-19 statistics, reporting 20 positive cases in the last 24 hours. A total of 3,377 COVID-19 tests have been conducted, while the positivity percentage remains 0.59%. At least 14 patients have been reported to be in critical care, with no deaths recorded in the last 24 hours.

It is crucial to follow the guidelines and recommendations set by health authorities during the festive season to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The ongoing pandemic has brought about significant changes in the way we celebrate and interact with each other, and it is essential to adapt to the new normal to stay safe.

The Sindh government’s efforts to raise awareness and provide access to booster shots are commendable. However, it is equally essential for citizens to play their part in preventing the spread of COVID-19. The pandemic is not over, and the emergence of new variants serves as a reminder that we must continue to take precautions and follow guidelines to keep ourselves and others safe.

In addition to following guidelines set by authorities, individuals can take steps to protect themselves and their loved ones. These include maintaining physical distance, wearing masks, washing hands regularly, avoiding crowded places, and seeking medical attention if symptoms appear.

With the emergence of new COVID-19 variants and increased human interaction during the festive holiday, it’s important that we follow the WHO’s pandemic SOPs with complete adherence.
