Sindh evacuates 133,887 as Chenab floods 16 villages
Sindh authorities have evacuated 133,887 people as floodwaters continued to move downstream, while the Chenab River inundated 16 villages in Rahim Yar Khan. Heavy rains battered Jhang, submerging low-lying areas, while Obaro, Daharki, and Mirpur Mathelo also faced intense downpours. Dadu experienced mixed spells of rain, and Naushahro Feroze was drenched by heavy showers that quickly flooded streets.
In Rahim Yar Khan, the Chenab spilled over its banks, trapping nearly 5,000 residents. Rescue teams have managed to evacuate around 2,000 people so far, but many remain stranded and in urgent need of help.
The Flood Forecasting Division has issued fresh alerts, reporting high to very high flood levels at key barrages and headworks across Punjab and Sindh. On the Ravi, a high flood is passing through Balloki with 139,030 cusecs of water, while Sidhnai has recorded 120,597 cusecs. Shahdara near Lahore is facing a medium flood with 90,411 cusecs.
Kasur’s Ganda Singh Wala is under severe stress as water flow has surged to 319,295 cusecs. Downstream on the Sutlej, Sulemanki has been placed in the high-flood category at 135,832 cusecs. The Chenab River remains dangerously swollen, with Trimmu Barrage recording 543,579 cusecs and Head Punjnad facing an alarming 609,669 cusecs, categorised as a high flood.
In Sindh, the Indus is also under pressure. Guddu Barrage is experiencing a medium flood with inflows of 401,352 cusecs and outflows of 377,226 cusecs. Sukkur Barrage is currently in low flood, recording 338,050 cusecs in and 299,200 cusecs out, while Kotri downstream is under strain with 243,743 cusecs inflow and 231,763 cusecs outflow.
Officials have warned that relentless water volumes are testing embankments to their limits, and local administrations have been directed to remain on high alert as the situation shows no signs of easing.
