Israel’s military announced on Tuesday that seven of its soldiers were killed during fierce combat operations in Gaza, as tensions remain high despite an internationally brokered ceasefire with Iran. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the troops were part of a unit operating in the southern Gaza Strip, where they encountered heavy resistance during a ground raid aimed at dismantling militant infrastructure.
According to the IDF, the soldiers were ambushed during a clearing operation near Khan Younis, an area that has seen intensified Israeli operations over the past several weeks. Military officials said the troops were targeted by anti-tank fire and explosive devices planted by Palestinian fighters believed to be affiliated with Hamas or Islamic Jihad. Rescue and reinforcement efforts reportedly faced additional attacks, compounding the losses.
While Israel has not yet released the names of the fallen soldiers, it has informed the families and stated that funerals will be held in the coming days. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered condolences to the bereaved families and reiterated the government’s commitment to “eliminating the terrorist threat from Gaza.”
This latest development adds to the growing toll of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which has killed over 200 Palestinians, including civilians, according to Gaza health officials. Meanwhile, calls for restraint continue from international actors, especially in light of the ceasefire currently holding between Israel and Iran, which many fear could be derailed by renewed hostilities in the Palestinian territories.
The loss of seven soldiers in a single incident marks one of the deadliest for Israeli forces in recent months and may spark debate within Israel over the military’s continued operations inside Gaza amid shifting regional dynamics.
