Russia to repatriate Indian military recruits from Russia-Ukraine conflict

The decision to repatriate these individuals came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the issue during his informal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. A diplomat stated that Russia “never wanted” Indians to fight for them in the Ukraine war.

Russian Charge d’affaires Roman Babushkin clarified that Moscow is aligned with the Indian government on this matter and hopes for a swift resolution. He emphasized that Russia did not actively recruit Indians into its military and their numbers are insignificant in the broader context of the conflict.

Babushkin noted that most Indians were hired under commercial arrangements, primarily seeking financial gains. He pointed out that these individuals are working illegally without proper work visas, often entering Russia on tourist visas.

Regarding those who have been killed, Babushkin mentioned that compensation and adherence to contractual obligations should be provided.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, during his visit to Moscow, confirmed that Russia has committed to releasing all Indian nationals from military service promptly, following strong advocacy by Prime Minister Modi on their behalf.
