Punjab Government to launch electric taxi scheme within 15 days
The Punjab government has announced that a new electric taxi scheme will be launched within the next 15 days, marking a significant step toward sustainable mobility and job creation. Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Yasin revealed the initiative during Pakistan’s first-ever Transport Expo, highlighting that the project is part of the province’s long-term Transport 2030 Vision.
According to details, the electric taxi scheme will introduce new vehicles and electric bikes, primarily targeting unemployed individuals. To ensure affordability, the taxis will be offered on interest-free instalments, making the scheme accessible for low-income groups. The initiative not only aims to provide employment opportunities but also seeks to reduce carbon emissions by shifting toward clean energy transport.
Bilal Yasin also shared plans for Lahore’s first tram service, which is expected to begin operations by February next year. In its initial phase, the tram will run along Jail Road and Main Boulevard, with future expansion planned for Canal Road.
The Transport Expo showcased a number of upcoming projects, including the construction of 41 modern depots across Punjab’s districts. Starting from December 2025, electric buses will also be introduced, with the government planning to deploy 1,100 electric buses and trams by 2030. Testing of autonomous vehicles without drivers is also in the pipeline, supported by the development of 1,000 electric vehicle charging stations across the province.
The Punjab government has set an ambitious goal of converting 80 percent of its public transport network to electric by 2030. The electric taxi scheme, set to roll out in just two weeks, is being seen as a key milestone in this transformation, combining employment opportunities with eco-friendly infrastructure.
