PTI not to appear before JIT over alleged attacks on police personnel

  • Fawad Chaudhary says he has not received any intimation, and if receives, he will challenge it before the relevant forum.

Lahore: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders decided not to appear on Friday (today) before Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed to investigate the attacks on the police personnel during operation at Zaman Park—the residence of its chairman Imran Khan.

The PTI leaders were due before the JIT on Friday (today)

Taking to Twitter,  PTI senior vice-president Fawad Chaudhary said that he did not receive any information regarding JIT probing the matter in Lahore.

“I have not received any notice and if I receive I will go to the court to challenge it on the ground that CCPO Lahore Bilal Siddiqui Kamyana is himself accused with Punjab interim CM Mohsin Naqvi and how he could investigate this case,” tweeted Fawad Chaudhary.

Musarrat Jamshed Cheema, another PTI leader, said that they would not appear before the JIT and if need arose their lawyers would turn up before it to represent them.

The reaction came after the Lahore police summoned the PTI leaders to appear before it to explain their positions regarding the alleged attacks on the security personnel outside Zaman Park during the operations.

Earlier, the Punjab Home department announced formation of a six-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate 10 cases filed against PTI workers. The cases involve allegations of attacking police and creating a law and order situation outside party chairman Imran Khan’s Zaman Park residence. They also resisted compliance with court orders by the Punjab government. Nine of these cases were filed at Race Course police station, while one was filed at Civil Lines police station.

According to the notification issued by the Home Department, SSP Imran Kishwar was appointed as the convener of the team, and SP Aftab Phulawan would also be a member of the squad. Additionally, three members from the Intelligence Bureau, Inter-Services Intelligence, and Military Intelligence would be included in the team.

The JIT will conduct and finalize investigations into the cases and submit a detailed report. It will be essential to have an impartial and thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served.

The PTI had initiated its Jail Bharo Tehreek on February 22 outside the Punjab Assembly, forcing the government to announce early elections. The investigation of these cases will shed light on the events that took place during this protest and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
