Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has blocked a total of 184 gambling websites and mobile applications, according to a written response submitted by the Cabinet Division in the National Assembly on Wednesday. The action comes amid growing concerns over the spread of betting platforms operating within the country through digital means.
The Minister In-Charge clarified that while PTA has the authority to block such platforms, taking legal action against individuals involved in gambling falls outside its jurisdiction. He added that all government institutions have been instructed not to sign agreements with companies involved in gambling activities.
The Cabinet Division also pointed out the limitations of PTA’s powers under current regulations, especially when it comes to removing or blocking illegal content beyond certain defined parameters.
Earlier, PTA had issued a separate warning regarding the sharing of illegal online content, urging users to refrain from posting material that violates national laws or incites hate. The authority emphasized that freedom of expression does not include blasphemy, incitement to violence, or spreading fake news, all of which are offenses under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.
