KARACHI: The results of the local government by-polls announced, revealing a fragmented political landscape with no party able to secure a simple majority in Karachi on Monday.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) emerged as the largest party, securing 98 Union Council (UC) seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami won 87 seats and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf took 43.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) confirmed that out of Karachi’s 246 UCs, results for 240 have been finalized. However, the results of six UCs have been withheld by the ECP.
Despite the PPP’s lead, no party in Karachi has secured a clear majority, indicating that alliances will be necessary to elect a mayor for the metropolitan area.
Meanwhile, concerns about incidents of mismanagement and violence during the polls have surfaced. In UC-119 of Hyderabad, ballot papers were reportedly snatched, and polling staff and voters were subjected to torture. The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) has ordered strict action against those responsible for the untoward incident.
The news of the violence and mismanagement has stirred up concerns about corruption and power struggles, with many residents feeling disillusioned with the state of the city’s government.
As the parties prepare to navigate the complex political landscape, there is hope that the CEC’s actions will ensure that future elections are free and fair. The people of Karachi remain committed to achieving a brighter future for their city, and the next steps in the political process will be closely watched.
