PMD dismisses social media claims of severe cold wave
ISLAMABAD: PMD dismisses social media claims of severe cold wave as the Pakistan Meteorological Department on Monday rejected reports circulating online about an impending spell of extreme cold across the country.
In a statement, the Met Office said there was no likelihood of any unusual or historically severe cold wave affecting Pakistan between January 16 and 25. It clarified that temperatures during this period are expected to remain within the normal range and that no forecast of record-breaking cold has been issued.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department advised the public not to rely on unverified weather updates shared on social media platforms and urged citizens to depend solely on official forecasts and credible sources for weather-related information. It reiterated that claims regarding an intense cold wave currently circulating online are baseless and misleading.
Meanwhile, the Met Office said that mainly cold and dry weather is expected over most parts of the country during the next twelve hours, while very cold conditions are likely to prevail in hilly areas. It added that moderate to dense fog is expected to persist over parts of Punjab, upper Sindh, and plain areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the PMD, temperatures recorded in major cities on Monday morning showed Islamabad at three degrees Celsius, Lahore at five, Karachi at nine, Peshawar at four, Quetta at zero, Gilgit at minus four, Murree at zero, and Muzaffarabad at two degrees Celsius.
The Met Office also issued a weather update for Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, stating that cloudy and very cold weather is expected in Srinagar, Leh, Pulwama, Anantnag, Shopian, and Baramula, while partly cloudy and cold conditions are likely in Jammu.
Temperatures recorded in the region this morning showed Srinagar, Pulwama, and Anantnag at minus three degrees Celsius, Jammu at four, Leh at minus nine, while Shopian and Baramula recorded minus two degrees Celsius.
