Plane crash-lands on busy Florida highway, collides with car on I-95
A small aircraft crash-landed on a busy Florida highway and collided with a car in a dramatic accident that took place Monday evening on Interstate-95 near Cocoa. The incident was captured on video that quickly went viral, showing the plane descending toward traffic before striking a Toyota Camry and skidding across the road.
Authorities said the crash occurred around 5:45 p.m. The 57-year-old female driver of the Camry was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The plane’s 27-year-old pilot and his 27-year-old passenger — the only two onboard — escaped without injuries.
The aircraft, identified as a small twin-engine plane (registration indicates a Beechcraft 55), reportedly suffered double-engine failure before the pilot opted for an emergency landing on the highway — believing it to be the only available option.
Following the impact, traffic on the highway came to a standstill as emergency crews rushed to the scene, cleared debris from the plane and car, and coordinated the rescue operation.
The crash has triggered investigations by multiple authorities: the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is leading the aviation-side probe, while the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and local fire-rescue services are handling the crash and traffic investigation.
Authorities cautioned against drawing conclusions as investigations remain ongoing — including a full review of the plane’s maintenance records and an analysis of flight data to determine what triggered the double-engine failure. Many motorists who witnessed the crash described the incident as terrifying and expressed relief that no one was killed.
