PIA to Resume UK Operations in August Following Removal from UK Air Safety List

In a landmark boost for Pakistan’s aviation sector, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will resume UK operations this August after the United Kingdom officially removed Pakistan from its Air Safety List.

According to sources, PIA’s first flight is scheduled to depart from Islamabad to Manchester on August 14, 2025 — a symbolic date that coincides with Pakistan’s Independence Day, adding national significance to the airline’s long-awaited return to UK skies.

Why Was the UK Ban Imposed?

In June 2020, the UK, alongside the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), banned Pakistani carriers from its airspace following a damning investigation into pilot licensing fraud after the tragic PIA Flight 8303 crash in Karachi that claimed 97 lives.
The revelations uncovered systemic safety lapses and fraudulent pilot credentials, sparking international concern over Pakistan’s aviation oversight.

How Did Pakistan Meet Safety Standards?

Since the ban, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has worked extensively with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to implement reforms. These included:

  • Overhauling pilot licensing systems.
  • Strengthening regulatory frameworks.
  • Improving safety audits and inspections.

Thanks to these reforms, Pakistan was first removed from the EU’s Air Safety List in November 2024, and now the UK has followed suit — marking a huge milestone for PIA and the wider Pakistani aviation industry.

What Happens Next for PIA?

While Pakistan’s removal from the UK Air Safety List lifts the major hurdle, airlines must still complete the necessary applications and meet the UK CAA’s operational requirements.
PIA has announced plans to operate 12 weekly flights to the UK using Boeing 777 aircraft, with further expansions to European destinations expected soon.

British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott CMG OBE, welcomed the move, praising both countries’ aviation experts for ensuring international safety standards are met. She noted the resumption will strengthen ties between the UK and Pakistan’s vibrant diaspora community of over 1.6 million people.

A Win for Families, Tourism & Trade

The UK is Pakistan’s third-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade worth £4.7 billion a year. The return of direct flights will not only help reconnect families but also boost tourism and trade, making travel easier, cheaper, and more convenient.

The Road Ahead

The lifting of the UK ban signals renewed global trust in Pakistan’s aviation sector but maintaining high safety standards will be crucial for PIA’s future growth.
Travellers and the large Pakistani community in Britain can finally look forward to the return of direct air links, after five years of costly detours and travel disruptions.
