Pakistani jail where prisoners make money by learning art, computer skills

KARACHI: The inmates earned millions of rupees in the jail and supported their families after learning different skills at Central Jail in Karachi, the latest reports suggested.

The prisoners learnt graphic designing, typing and other courses relevant to the computer and started earning money. They supported their families while being in jail.

The latest reports said that the inmates also learnt paintings and many other skills to become useful citizens. Even Chinese language was being taught to the the inmates so that they could use the art to earn money for their families.

“An inmate made painting of a pen from a Kalashnikov,” said an official, adding that an IG prison visited the jail and appreciated the prisoner for such a great art work. The IG, he said, also bought that painting and displayed the same at his office.

“A computer lab set up by Al-Khidmat Foundation is being used to train the prisoners,” showed the video, pointing out that many of the prisoners learnt computer courses.

The inmates’ paintings and sketches are sold after being auctioned to generate income for the creators. “I sold paintings worth Rs3 to Rs4 million in nine years in the jail and and supported my family,” he added.

A few days ago, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Kot Lakhpat jail and Central Jail in Lahore and expressed serious concerns over the situation as the poor hygienic and lack of proper medication system in the jail.
