Five soldiers martyred as Pakistan Army MI-17 helicopter crashes in Gilgit Baltistan
RAWALPINDI: A Pakistan Army MI-17 helicopter crashed near Kohodoor, Gilgit Baltistan (GB) on Monday, resulting in the martyrdom of five soldiers, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The ISPR confirmed that the helicopter was on a routine mission when it went down in the mountainous region of GB. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site to recover the bodies of the martyrs and secure the wreckage.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the crash, but officials said a detailed investigation is underway. Eyewitnesses from nearby villages reported hearing a loud explosion followed by smoke rising from the mountainside.
The tragedy comes as Pakistan’s armed forces continue extensive operations in the northern areas, with the military frequently relying on helicopters for transport due to the region’s rugged terrain.
In recent years, Pakistan has witnessed multiple military aviation accidents in high-altitude regions, often due to unpredictable weather and difficult flying conditions.
The sacrifices of the martyred soldiers were hailed by ISPR, which reaffirmed that the Pakistan Army remains committed to defending the nation despite such losses. Funeral prayers for the martyrs are expected to be held at their native towns with full military honors.
