ChatGPT-5 for free to all users : OpenAI’s Most Powerful Update Yet

OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT-5 for free to all users, claims ‘smarter’ than before, in what is being described as a major leap forward in artificial intelligence. With nearly 700 million weekly users, ChatGPT’s fifth generation is being touted as the most advanced version so far — capable of delivering more accurate, insightful, and safe responses than its predecessors. CEO Sam Altman described GPT-5 as “clearly a model that is generally intelligent,” noting that while it isn’t fully AGI yet, it represents a huge step in that direction.

This update introduces “vibe coding,” where the AI can autonomously create functional apps and software with minimal prompts. In a live demo, ChatGPT-5 produced a French-learning app within minutes, showcasing its expanded ability to handle complex, multi-step tasks. Altman compared the evolution of the system to human learning: “GPT-3 felt like high school, GPT-4 like college, and GPT-5 is finally like speaking to a PhD-level expert.”

Stronger Safety Measures and Wider Applications

Safety has been a key focus in GPT-5’s development. OpenAI’s safety research lead, Alex Beutel, revealed that the system has been trained to avoid deceptive outputs and to refuse potentially harmful requests. It’s now better equipped to handle sensitive subjects, offering reliable, high-level information without risking misuse.

Beyond safety, GPT-5 is also more versatile across industries — from healthcare diagnostics and academic research to creative writing and advanced programming. This makes it a valuable tool not only for casual users but also for professionals seeking AI assistance in complex fields.

The rollout also coincides with OpenAI’s landmark deal with the US government, providing ChatGPT Enterprise to federal employees for just $1 for a year. Additionally, OpenAI has released two open-weight AI models — gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b — to encourage transparency and competition in the AI sector.

With rivals like Google and Microsoft investing billions into AI, the free release of GPT-5 is expected to intensify the race for dominance. For now, OpenAI’s bold move positions it at the forefront, offering a smarter, safer, and more accessible AI to the world.
