OpenAI confirms 2026 launch for secret AI device; rumors point to smart earbuds

DAVOS: OpenAI confirms 2026 launch for secret AI device, fueling growing speculation that the company is preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with a smart wearable, possibly AI-powered earbuds designed to rival Apple’s AirPods.

The confirmation came from OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane, who revealed the timeline while speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Monday. Lehane said the company aims to unveil its mysterious hardware by the end of 2026, while cautioning that the exact timing would depend on how development progresses.

Despite the caveat, Lehane stressed that OpenAI remains on track for a launch this year, aligning with earlier industry reports that suggested a possible release around September 2026.

While OpenAI has not officially disclosed the nature or purpose of the device, leaks and industry rumors have begun to paint a clearer picture. A China-based technology leaker known as “Smart Pikachu” has claimed that OpenAI is preparing to compete directly in the premium audio market currently dominated by Apple’s AirPods.

According to the leak, manufacturing partner Foxconn is developing a “special audio product” codenamed Sweetpea, which is part of a broader internal effort reportedly called Project Gumdrop. The device is described as either open-ear headphones or advanced earbuds, accompanied by an egg-shaped charging dock.

The rumored hardware is said to feature powerful on-device processing through a 2-nanometer, smartphone-grade chip, potentially enabling advanced AI functions without heavy reliance on cloud computing.

The same leak suggests that OpenAI may be planning a broader hardware ecosystem, with up to four additional devices expected between now and 2028. These could include a “home-style” AI device and a smart pen, signaling OpenAI’s ambitions beyond software and chatbots.

Most of the confirmed information surrounding the project has come from OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman and legendary designer Jony Ive. Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom, entered into a partnership with OpenAI last year to shape the look and feel of the company’s first consumer hardware product.

In previous interviews, Altman and Ive have described the upcoming device as “so simple” and intuitive that users would want to interact with it “almost without thought,” hinting at a product designed to seamlessly integrate AI into everyday life.

With OpenAI’s Davos confirmation, expectations across the global tech industry have intensified, as analysts and consumers alike anticipate the first tangible result of the high-profile collaboration between one of the world’s most influential AI companies and one of the most iconic designers in modern technology.
