Online Beggars to Face Three Months in Jail and Dh10,000 Fine, Warns Dubai Police

Dubai Police has issued a stern warning against online begging and donation scams, stating that offenders could face up to three months in jail and a fine of 10,000 dirhams.

In an advisory issued ahead of Ramadan, authorities cautioned residents about a noticeable rise in fraud cases linked to online begging. Officials said scammers often exploit the spirit of generosity during the holy month by circulating fake donation appeals on websites and social media platforms.

Dubai Police urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid responding to suspicious requests for financial assistance. Residents were advised to ensure that donations, including Zakat contributions, are made only through officially authorized charitable organizations approved by relevant authorities.

“Professional beggars and fraudsters take advantage of people’s goodwill, particularly during Ramadan,” officials said, emphasizing the importance of verifying the legitimacy of fundraising campaigns before contributing.

Authorities also encouraged residents to immediately report any suspicious activity or online appeals that appear fraudulent. Prompt reporting, police said, can help prevent further victims and support efforts to combat cyber-enabled financial crimes.

Under UAE law, individuals found guilty of engaging in online begging may face imprisonment for up to three months along with a fine of 10,000 dirhams. Police reiterated that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to misuse digital platforms for illegal fundraising.

The warning comes as Ramadan approaches, a period traditionally marked by increased charitable giving across the country. Officials stressed that while generosity is encouraged, it must be channeled through legitimate and regulated avenues to ensure that aid reaches those genuinely in need.
